Resources for Writers

There are a number of online resources for writing–both in college and in life. This site will be regularly updated with new resources.

Resources for Writing in College:

Great Books on Writing:

  • Several Short Sentences About Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg (Knopf, Aug. 2012) – Here’s a short review of the book: a similar (and even shorter) review was originally published in the Decatur Daily on October 14, 2012 by the same author. Great book! It will improve your style.
  • Writing with Style: Conversations on the Art of Writing by John R. Trimble (3rd edition, Prentice Hall, 2011). Great book! Easy to read.  Written for college students who want to write clearly and convincingly. Doesn’t read like a textbook.
  • The Craft of Revision by Donald Murray (2nd edition, Harcourt Brace, 1995). Written for creative writers who want to improve their craft: nonfiction, fiction, poetry.
  • On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King (Scribner, 2000). Hey, it’s Stephen King! Yes, the Stephen King. You can’t go wrong with this book if you’re a writer.
  • Writing to Change the World by Mary Pipher (Riverhead Books, 2006). Pipher has a background in psychology, anthropology and therapy; she has written numerous books and spoken around the world.
  • Writing True: The Art and Craft of Creative Nonfiction by Sondra Perl and Mimi Schwartz (Houghton Mifflin, 2006). Excellent starter book for creative nonfiction writers. Applies the techniques of creative writing–fiction, poetry, and drama–to life writing genres: memoir, literary journalism, essays about place, essays about people, etc.
